Sam's Story
Introduction
At 92, Sam enjoyed a healthy active lifestyle, including sailing the coast of North America on his 32 ft sailboat with his girlfriend. However, after a fall, he made a fast move into respite, 6 hours away from his home, to be closer to his son Doug.
Challenge
Sam was discharged from the hospital after his fall and needed some of his essential items such as furniture, his car, and mobility scooter sent to his new retirement suite as quickly as possible. The out-of-province family needed to get to his condo and remove the personal items that Sam wanted them to keep. The remaining contents that Sam no longer wanted, required a sale, donation, and clearing.
Solution
Sam was aware of Gordon’s Downsizing and Estate Services through a couple of neighbours who had used them and he told Doug about them. Doug was uncertain that one company could manage all the moving parts and fund the necessary steps, but he called to discuss. A video call was set up with all key family members and the Gordon’s team, to ensure they were supportive of a one-stop solution.
The family determined this was the best solution for them and Sam, so an agreement was signed 3 days following the initial inquiry. A review of the property by the Gordon’s team took place the next day, in which a photo inventory was created and a lockbox was installed at the condo to ensure security.
The following week, Sam’s car, mobility scooter, and personal items were moved to his new retirement suite - 6 hours away. This also included placement and unpacking of everything. Two weeks later, the out-of-province family came and took the few items they could carry easily and asked Gordon’s to ship the rest. Following that, the contents were catalogued and removed for auction. The condo was cleaned, inspected, prepared for market, listed, and sold. The sailboat was taken by a family member.
Benefit
By working with the Gordon’s team, Sam’s family didn't have to manage or finance elements of the transition. Sam was able to ensure the right things happened, the right way, at the right time for him and his family. Sam acted for himself in terms of decision-making and with the help of the Gordon's team his complex situation was simplified for his family.
Result
The result was that Sam was able to have a complete and efficient liquidation of his physical assets in one tidy envelope. The family impact was minimized so they could keep their attention on supporting Sam through his continued health issues.
