Downsizing is much more than just packing-up and moving. It’s an emotional journey from start to finish, requiring sensitivity, patience and attention to detail. This is where a Move Manager makes all the difference.
Most people who decide to downsize have lived in their home for 20, 30 or even 40+ years. The notion of sorting through multiple decades of accumulated possessions, memories and emotions can feel oppressive. We know, through our experience, that many people actually end up coping with high levels of stress, anxiety and even physical pain while trying to navigate the dozens of step in the process; from packing, sorting, selling, donating, gifting, and moving, to unpacking, storing, and setting up in the new home. At Gordon’s, we do all of that FOR YOU!
We begin this highly personalized service by explaining every step of the downsizing journey with a customized move plan that’s tailored to a client’s needs. Every detail is coordinated from start to finish, including scheduling movers, packing every item with care, and ensuring the right amount of boxes and packing materials are on hand. We even search through the socks in your drawers just in case you’ve hidden (and forgotten about) a bar of silver (photo attached, found under a bookshelf!), a diamond ring, cash, or other valuables.
When clients arrive at their new home, they are welcomed by little touches that we know are important to them whether it’s music, a favorite bedside photo, how they arrange their slippers by the bed, etc. We’ve also hung the art, made their bed the way they like it, and arranged the furniture just right. The personal touches help ease the transition, making the unfamiliar space immediately comfortable and welcoming.
Yet, our services go far beyond the actual move itself. Once the main belongings are packed and moved, we sort through what remains, shipping items to family members, selling and disposing of unwanted items, and then preparing the property for sale. Sometimes this means coordinating subcontractors like painters, plumbers, electricians, lawn care, and/or snow removal.
For example, we once helped a woman downsize from a large home in King City to a smaller seniors residence in Kingston after her husband passed away. During the sorting process, we found some rings she had lost 20 years earlier in a small jar at the back of a bathroom cabinet. She thought they had been lost forever and was overjoyed when we placed them back in her hands where they belonged. Another time, while clearing out the home of a modest family, we discovered $30,000 in cash and bonds hidden in a shed. It was a life-changing surprise for the family when we handed over the unexpected windfall.
But that’s how we operate, with trust, care, and old-fashioned values. Moving away from a lifetime of memories and emotions should be a soul-enriching experience. Our family-focused team knows how to get you there.
